Research Paper

A parent and child's relationship throughout their life is very important and greatly impacts the child's development. According to Researcher Clark, “research shows that parental involvement in their children’s learning positively affects the child’s performance at school (Fan & Chen, 2001) in both primary and secondary schools (Feinstein & Symons, 1999), leading to higher academic achievement, greater cognitive competence, greater problem-solving skills, greater school enjoyment, better school attendance and fewer behavioural problems at school (Melhuish, Sylva, Sammons et al., 2001).” Which shows that the small things done between a child and parent during young childhood years has a great effect on the child's performance all throughout the child's life. There was also a study following this, testing the effects on the children performance if read to from the beginning and it showed “there is an important role for parents in the development and educational performance of their children. Parental reading to children increases the child’s reading and other cognitive skills up to the age of 10–11. This is an early-life intervention that is beneficial for the rest of their lives.(Transition to Kindergarten, n.d.).” This shows that parents have the ability to set their children up for success simple by reading to them from the earliest in age. It will motivate the child to be more happily involved in their education as well as lead them to success with the knowledge they will gain and hold with them for the rest of their schooling and their futures.

Connection

While working with these young students I focused mainly on not judging a book by its cover because I didn’t know what any of these children were going home too. My main focus was to help educate them on their schooling as well as how important their education was. Some of the students misbehaved and didn’t want to complete classwork and even homework assignments. But I never let that get to me, I just continued working with them and making sure to inform them how important it was for them to get all their work done. Which is why this paragraph from my research paper specifically connected to my project because I wanted to be able to help as much as I could and set these students up for success. I figured out that a child's first and most important teacher is their parents and I knew right away that we needed to work closely with them and help educate them so they can do their part. Ms. Muriel and I worked hard in encouraging the parents to check students folders daily and help work on homework assignments. As well as join teachers for parent teacher conferences. After educating myself with all the research I discovered I hope I was able to be there for the students but as well as the parents so they are aware of how important they are. And also so they can pass it on and many people can be educated and all students can be set up for success.
